Seize the Grey could be loose on the lead again
Up until a few days ago, Todd Pletcher said he might enter front running Fierceness, the Florida Derby winner. Pletcher is planning on running Antiquarian, Protective, and Mindframe. Only Mindframe has the speed capable of sticking with Seize the Grey. Mystik Dan could as well, but both Mystik Dan and Mindframe are more pressers than they are front-runners.
If Seize the Grey gets an easy lead like he did in the Preakness, it could be all over at the quarter mile. The D. Wayne Lukas runner is as talented as any horse in the race, with the possible exception of Mindframe. Keep that in mind when you handicap the Belmont.
Mindframe is a new shooter with talent
The Pletcher runner is undefeated after two starts. Being undefeated doesn’t always point to talent. In this case it does because Mindframe hasn’t just won his first two races, he’s won his first two races by dominating his opponents.
Mindframe blistered the competition in his maiden score, winning by 10. He followed up the maiden win by crushing it in an allowance victory. Don’t be surprised if Mindframe goes off the chalk as they break from the gate. So if you can get a fair price before the day of the race, consider.
Sierra Leone is going to have to make out another trip
Sierra Leone was unlucky to lose the Kentucky Derby. Chad Brown has pointed to the Belmont since the Derby, which means Sierra Leone will be fresh, making the well-bred 3-year-old a legit Belmont contender.
But the trouble Sierra Leone faced in the Derby may exist in the Belmont. Although there are fewer horses, the race is full of pressers, stalkers, and closers, meaning Flavien Prat will have to make the right move on Sierra Leone all the while being wary of other jockeys possibly making their moves at the same time.
Prat can get it done. He’s a great jockey. But it won’t be easy.
Four horse race if Sierra Leone, Mystik Dan, Seize the Grey, and Mindframe enter
If Sierra Leone, Mystik Dan, Seize the Grey, and Mindframe make it to the starting gate, the Belmont will be a four horse race. None of the other runner have the talent that stacks up to the top four.
When you sit down to handicap the Belmont, consider using Leone, Dan, the Grey, or Mindframe as your key horse in exotics. Doing so should give you a shot to cash a few tickets on the 2024 Belmont Stakes.
