Horse racing’s final Triple Crown race of the year takes place on Saturday, June 8. Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and Preakness Stakes winner Seize the Grey resume their rivalry. Second-place Derby finisher Sierra Leone will also run. So will Mindframe, one of the most discussed equines in North America after two fantastic victories. Top 2024 Belmont Stakes Favorites
- Sierra Leone +175
- Mindframe +300
- Mystik Dan +400
- Seize the Grey +450
Sierra Leone has a chance to win the Belmont, but if the odds hold, the Brown runner is an underlay. At the odds, Sierra Leone should be the easy choice. But the well-bred runner faces stiff competition.
No doubt, the switch Flavien Prat will help. But Sierra Leone is a closer in a field that lacks speed. That will hurt him.
Both Mystik Dan and Seize the Grey have better chances of winning the Belmont than Sierra Leone. Dan is as quality as it gets. The Derby winner proved his quality chasing loose on the lead Seize the Grey in the Preakness and not throwing in the towel.
The race sets up for Seize the Grey to steal it. If Fierceness had entered, the Grey would face stiff front running pressure. Without Fierceness, beating Seize the Grey.
Mindframe, though, has the speed to stay close to Seize the Grey. So if Mindframe is no more than a length or two off the Lukas runner, the rising Pletcher star projects to run by in the stretch and to hold off the closers. Give Mindframe the favorite’s nod.

Tuscan Gold, like every other horse in the Preakness, had no shot once Seize the Grey got the early and easy lead. The problem with backing Tuscan Gold is that although the Brown runner finished fourth in the second jewel, Gold didn’t improve much off the Louisiana Derby run in March.
Honor Marie peaked in the Louisiana Derby when finishing second to Caching Freedom. The eighth place Derby finisher is going to have to pick it up big time to get it done on Saturday. It’s difficult to see that happening.
Antiquarian and Resilience both have legit dark horse potential. Antiquarian won the Peter Pan Stakes. Another forward jump makes Antiquarian a contender in the Belmont.
Resilience finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby. The Bill Mott trained colt made a nice move around the turn at Churchill before flattening out in the stretch. The move may have been too early. Not only that, but Resilience had to go wide. So a better trip could lead to an upset Belmont victory.
Top 2024 Belmont Stakes Longshots
- Dornoch +1600
- The Wine Steward +1600
- Protective +1600
Dornoch and Protective are likely to go off at lower odds than The Wine Steward, but The Wine Steward is the pick. The stalker presser type trained by Mike Maker will be closer to what projects as a tepid pace.
If The Wine Steward can make out a decent trip, watch out. The horse has talent and has shown a decent turn of foot. Put The Wine Steward in all of your exotics just in case the Maker runner takes a step forward on Saturday.
