2022 Valero Texas Open Recap
JJ Spaun outlasted Matt Kuchar and Matt Jones by 2 strokes. Spaun beat Kuchar and Jones after shooting a -13. The two Matts were in second place with -11s.
Adam Hadwin, Beau Hossler, Troy Merritt, and Charles Howell III tied for third place at -10. There was a five-way tie for eight place at -9 among Keegan Bradley, Dylan Frittelli, Matthias Schwab, Brendan Todd, and Gary Woodland.
2023 Valero Texas Open Top Pick
The top pick teed off at the 2022 Valero Texas Open and it wasn’t good. Rickie Fowler was in trouble from the outset, shooting a 72 on Thursday.
Then on Friday, Rickie shot an even worse 74. Fowler didn’t even make the cut. So the top choice has a lot to prove.
Still, the odds suggest Fowler has a chance. Rickie finished a tied thirteenth at The Players Championship, which was over a much more difficult course and against tougher competition. Fowler can get it done.
2023 Valero Texas Open Second Pick
The favorite didn’t play in this event last year. Oddsmakers have installed Tyrrell Hatton the favorite because Tyrrell has played excellent golf in recent tournaments.
Hatton finished a terrific tied fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Tyrrell followed up the excellent finish with a tied second at The Players Championship.
If Hatton is as sharp this week as he was at TPC-Sawgrass, he’ll win.

After shooting a 74 first round at last year’s Valero Texas Open, Hideki Matsuyama withdrew from the tournament. The Valero Texas Open takes place a week before the Masters.
Matsuyama figured if he had no shot of winning the Valero, he should withdrawal and prepare for the first major tournament of the year.
Hideki could pull the same thing this year. Or he might go for the win. Matsuyama shot a 74-70-67-68 at The Players Championship to finish fifth. Hideki could get it going this week.
2023 Valero Texas Open Underdog Pick
Last year’s Valero Texas Open offers more than fair odds to repeat. Spaun got off to a rousing start in 2022 when shooting a 67 in the first round.
From there, JJ Spaun practically coasted to the trophy presentation. Leading up to the 2023 Valero Texas Open, Spaun is playing terrible golf.
JJ has missed the cut in four of the last five. The thirty-third place finish at the Genesis Invitational doesn’t inspire. Spaun is the defending champion, though. So he could rediscover his best swing in time to push for the repeat victory.
