2023 MLB Season Long Shots That Could Beat the Odds

By Hank Blaine

Major League Baseball hasn’t shown back-to-back World Series winners since 1998 through 2000 when the Yankees won three straight. Not only that, but in some seasons, major long shots took the Fall Classic. The fact that underdogs can win the World Series is the reason for this blog. Check out four long shot teams that can take the 2023 MLB World Series title.

Minnesota Twins

  • 2023 World Series Odds: +3500

Sonny Gray had a 3.08 ERA last season. Following the Twins ace in the rotation is Joe Ryan, who went 13-8 and posted a 3.55 ERA. Third on the depth chart, Pablo Lopez posted a 3.75 ERA while throwing for the Marlins.

Lopez could for sure lower his ERA. Gray and Ryan could as well. Not only that, but the Twins are going to be a much better team at the plate in 2023 than they were in 2022.

Carlos Correa is a difference maker. The former Houston Astro is excellent in the field and at the plate. Correa makes the entire batting lineup better. Also, the rest of the teams in the AL Central shouldn’t scare the Twins. So Minnesota has a big shot of making the postseason.

Los Angeles Angels

  • 2023 World Series Odds: +4000

The Angels will have to improve to make it to the postseason. Improvement could happen. LAA looks like, at least on paper, one of the most improved teams in Major League Baseball.

Shohei Ohtani is an ace on the mound and a stud in the lineup. The dude could get the triple crown this season and win close to 20 games. That’s how dominant he could be in 2023.

Mike Trout is an AL MVP contender even though the award is Shohei’s to lose. But the real reason to believe the Angels’ have a long shot chance of winning the Fall Classic is because of an improved starting rotation.

After Ohtani, Tyler Anderson gets the ball. Anderson had a 2.57 ERA while throwing for the Dodgers last season. He will protect Shohei and Ohtani will protect him.

Third starter Patrick Sandoval posted a 2.91 ERA. If the rotation improves across the board, the Halos could challenge the Stros in the AL West.

San Francisco Giants

  • 2023 World Series Odds: +4000

San Diego and the Los Angeles Dodgers are the favorites to win the NL West. However, the Giants might be good enough to get past both.

The Giants have a decent rotation led by Logan Webb and his 2.90 ERA. If Sean Manaea rediscovers his best pitches, the G-Men could make a run.

The Padres and Dodgers will be good, but both have question marks. Also, in 2021, the Giants won 107 games. So the franchise doesn’t stay down for long.

Texas Rangers

  • 2023 World Series Odds: +4000

The Rangers are the second team on this list that plays in the AL West. Texas should have a tougher time contending with the Stros than the Angels.

The Rangers’ success depends on Jacob DeGrom and Nathan Eovaldi. If the top two starters in the rotation throw lights out, Texas for sure could upset Houston and win the AL West. Once in the playoffs, anything can happen.
