New York Yankees

  • 2023 AL East Odds: +120

On paper, the Yankees should rock the American League East. The Orioles and Red Sox aren’t very good.

But a deeper dive reveals that not all is copasetic in the Bronx. Yankees’ ace Gerrit Cole posted a 3.50 ERA in 2022. The stat isn’t exactly breathtaking.

Second in the rotation Carlos Rodon has a 2.88 ERA. So Tampa’s starters might be more effective. Also, the Blue Jays are a legit World Series contender.

Will the Yankees Win Their Division No

Cleveland Guardians

  • 2023 AL Central Odds: +135

Minnesota should be the favorite in the AL Central, not Cleveland. The Guardians will be okay, but not great.

It comes down to pitching because both teams can hit. Actually, Minnesota should be better at the plate then Cleveland because the Twins signed Carlos Correa.

The Twins boast three starters that posted sub-4.00 ERAs last season. That gives Minnesota more flexibility during the season than Cleveland.

Will the Guardians Win Their Division No

Houston Astros

  • 2023 AL West Odds: -185

The Mariners will be good, but Seattle doesn’t have the rotation that stands up to one led by Framber Valdez and Christian Javier, a pair of Cy Young contenders.

The other teams in the AL West are decent, but not great. The Angels could be this season’s surprise team and they’d still lose the division title to the Stros.

Although Justin Verlander now plays for the New York Mets, Houston won’t miss a beat. The Astros win another division title.

Will the Astros Win Their Division Yes

Atlanta Braves

  • 2023 NL East Odds: +100

It’s tough to back the Braves because the NL East is so deep. The defending National League champs, the Philadelphia Phillies, play in the East.

The New York Mets are more of a favorite to win the World Series than the ATL. For sure, Atlanta can win the division, but the Mets and Phillies will push the Braves throughout the season. So the ATL, because they’re the chalk, is a play against.

Will the Braves Win Their Division No

St. Louis Cardinals

  • 2023 NL Central Odds: -134

The Cardinals’ rotation is suspect. Jordan Montgomery, second in the rotation, isn’t a great starter. Jack Flaherty, the ace, missed most of last season.

Adam Wainwright is hurt and may not play until, well, we don’t know. Corbin Burnes is Milwaukee’s ace. So the Brewers are the better play to win the NL Central than the Cardinals.

Will the Cardinals Win Their Division No

Los Angeles Dodgers

  • 2023 NL West Odds: -130

The Dodgers’ bats went cold towards the end of last season. That’s a terrible sign because LAD’s starting rotation is different in 2023 than it was in 2022.

Walker Buehler may throw this season. He may not. It’s always iffy when pitchers get injured. Julio Urias could be a legit ace. He may not. Clayton Kershaw could throw as well at the age of 35 as he did at 30. He may not.

The San Diego Padres have a great rotation and a better hitting lineup than the Dodgers. SD is the play to win the NL West.
