UFC 267 Main Card Preview

Magomed Ankalaev vs. Volkan Oezdemir

Volkan Oezdemir hasn’t fought since July 11, 2020. When Oezdemir did fight, things didn’t turn out well. Jiri Prochazka knocked out Volkan in the second-round. Magomed Ankalaev has a 1-inch height advantage over Oezdemir. More importantly, the favorite has won five straight, including knocking out Ion Cutelaba twice in 2020 and winning a unanimous decision over Nikita Krylov on Feb. 27 this year. Ankalaev will be tough to beat.

UFC 267 Pick: Magomed Ankalaev

Li Jingliang vs. Khamzat Chimaev

With an 18-6 record Li Jingliang is the more experienced fighter. Not only that, but Jingliang has won 4-of-5, has never suffered a knockout loss, and has suffered just 1 submission loss. Chimaev is 9-0. The Swedish mixed-martial-arts fighter is 6-0 via TKO or KO and 3-0 via submission. What the record tells us is that no fighter has gone the distance with Khamzat. Not only that, but the favorite has a 3.5 inch reach advantage and is an inch taller. The chalk should easily handle the underdog.

UFC 267 Pick: Khamzat Chimaev

Alexander Volkov vs. Marcin Tybura

On paper, Alexander Volkov should easily win this. The 33-9 heavyweight has a 4-inch height advantage over his opponent. Volkov also has a 2-inch reach advantage and has been fighting some well-known dudes, losing to Cyril Green via unanimous decision in his last and knocking out Alistair Overeem in the preceding fight.

But even though Volkov looks like an easy winner, the underdog is the play. Marcin Tybura has won five straight. He knocked out Greg Hardy a couple of bouts ago and beat Ben Rothwell via unanimous decision last October. Tybura can pull off the upset victory.

UFC 267 Pick: Marcin Tybura

Islam Makhachev vs. Dan Hooker

There was a time when every MMA handicapper on the planet would have backed Dan Hooker at favorite’s odds to beat a guy like Islam Makhachev. That doesn’t happen anymore because Hooker has lost 2-of-3.

Not only that, but he faces a 1-loss Makhachev on Saturday. Islam is 20-1. Makhachev hasn’t lost since 2015. So even though Hooker height and reach advantages, he’ll struggle versus the chalk.

UFC 267 Pick: Islam Makhachev

Petr Yan vs. Cory Sandhagen

Former bantamweight champ Petr Yan lost his belt via disqualification on the UFC 259: Blachowicz versus Adesanya undercard. Yan had found success with 7-of-7 takedown attempts. But eventual winner Aljamain Sterling beat Yan in the standup, landing 97-of-230 significant strikes. Even if Yan hadn’t suffered the disqualification, he may not have won.

Saturday’s opponent, Cory Sandhagen, is 14-3 and heads into this after a split-decision loss to T.J. Dillashaw in his last. Sandhagen is 4 inches taller than Yan and has a 3-inch reach advantage. The physical advantages are enough to give Sandhagen a look.

UFC 267 Pick: Cory Sandhagen

Jan Blachowicz vs. Glover Teixeira

Now 42-years-old, Glover Teixeira is on a 5-match winning streak. Teixeira steps into the Octagon after an extended layoff. The challenger hasn’t fought since Nov. 7, 2020. Although he won the bout, the layoff could have a detrimental effect.

Jan Blachowicz hasn’t lost since 2019. In his last, Blachowicz used a size advantage to hand Israel Adesanya his first ever loss. The victory was the second time Blachowicz has defended his title. Teixeira is a veteran. So he will make this close. But Blachowicz is on a roll. Give the champ the nod.

UFC 267 Pick: Jan Blachowicz
