21-year-old Italian Giulio Zeppieri beat Santiago Rodriguez Taverna in his first round qualifying match 6-4, 6-3. But Giulio fell to Leandro Riedi and didn’t stamp his ticket to the Australian Open. Riedi and Zeppieri played 3 sets and 2 tiebreaker sets. The final tiebreaker went to Riedi 13-11.
Joao Sousa is 2-8 in singles matches this season. Sousa failed to qualify for the BNP Paribas Open in his last. The underdog in this match lost to Filip Misolic. It’s difficult to know who has the edge. Sousa is 34, though, so Zeppieri has youth on his side. Backing the chalk makes sense.
