Why Bet on the New Orleans Saints?

There are better days ahead in the Big Easy, as the New Orleans Saints picked up their first win of the new campaign with a tense 16-15 victory at home over the Tennessee Titans. New Orleans will now travel northeast for the first of two divisional matchups against the Panthers.

Derek Carr made a strong albeit improvable start in a Saints uniform, with the former long-time Raider throwing for 305 passing yards and one passing touchdown. However, Carr did get sacked four times and also threw an interception to keep Tennessee hanging in the contest. It’s also concerning that New Orleans scored just 16 points, making their need for stud running back Alvin Kamara (suspension) all the more imperative.

On the flip side, the Saints’ defense seems to have regained its mojo that was absent last season. They limited the Titans to under 200 passing yards (4.9 yards per passing attempt) and forced a whopping four turnovers, including a third and final pick off of Ryan Tannehill to set up Carr’s go-ahead TD pass to Rashid Shaheed in the third quarter.

Why Bet on the Carolina Panthers?

It will indeed take some time before the Carolina Panthers can be taken seriously, as their 24-10 loss in Week 1 to the Atlanta Falcons would suggest. Although Carolina gained 60 more yards on offense (281) over Atlanta (221), they failed to capitalize on their drives and made some costly blunders along the way.

First overall pick Bryce Young had himself quite the trial by NFL fire, as the rookie quarterback completed just 20 of 38 passes for 146 yards, one passing TD, and two picks. Young also fumbled the ball but didn’t lose possession, as the 22-year-old Heisman Trophy winner looks to improve in Week 2. Thankfully, the Panthers’ running game is quite a beast, with the backfield tandem of Miles Sanders and Chuba Hubbard combined for 132 rushing yards, and with Young also getting three carries for 17 more yards on the ground.

Carolina’s defense looked competent enough in the opening week, sacking Atlanta’s Desmond Ridder four times and only giving up those points due to the turnovers by the offense giving the Falcons great field position. As such, it’s really up to Carolina’s young QB to make the next big leap toward becoming the top draft prospect he is with a more sound performance in his second NFL start.

Saints vs. Panthers Betting Trends

  • The Saints are 5-2 in their last seven games on the road (4-3 ATS).
  • The Saints are 5-3 in their last eight meetings against Carolina (3-5 ATS).
  • The totals have gone under in each of New Orleans’ last five road games.
  • The Panthers have won four of their last five home games (SU/ATS).
  • The Panthers are 4-3 in their last seven outings against their NFC South rivals (5-2 ATS).
  • The totals have gone under in all five of the latest meetings between these two teams.

Saints vs. Panthers Expert Betting Prediction

The inexperience under center will bite the Panthers more often than not this season. However, Carolina won its last few home games last season despite all the turmoil, and another home upset over a division rival could be in the works. We’ll call this a loss for the up-and-down Saints as the Panthers cover as home dogs to give Young a morale-boosting maiden victory as a pro and with their defense doing just enough to keep Carr and the New Orleans offense at bay.
