Purdue vs. Michigan 2023 College Football Week 10 Odds, Preview & Pick

By Hank Blaine

It’s a rematch of the 2022 Big Ten title game on Saturday as Purdue visits unbeaten and No. 3 Michigan with the Wolverines as massive favorites on the NCAAF odds with the Boilermakers struggling this season.

In last year’s Big Ten title game, Michigan thumped Purdue 43-22. Donovan Edwards ran for 185 yards and a score, J.J. McCarthy threw three touchdown passes and the Wolverines won their second straight Big Ten title and reached the College Football Playoff for the second year in a row. Edwards broke open this game with a 60-yard on the first play of the second half to set up one score. He added a 27-yard TD sprint on Michigan’s next series to make it 28-13. Boilers QB Aidan O’Connell was 32 of 47 with 366 yards and two interceptions. He’s now in the NFL.

This will be the 61st meeting between the Wolverines and Boilermakers. Michigan leads the all-time series, 46-14, and has victories in nine of the past 11 games. U-M has a 28-5 record against PU in Ann Arbor, including a 24-5 mark at Michigan Stadium.

Why Bet on the Purdue Boilermakers?

At 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten, Purdue will not be returning to the Big Ten title game under first-year coach Ryan Walters. They come off a 31-14 loss last Saturday at Nebraska. In cold and blustery conditions, Purdue’s defense forced four turnovers, scored a fumble recovery for a touchdown and allowed just 277 yards of total offense, but an early Nebraska lead proved too much to overcome. Dillon Thieneman paced the Boilermakers on the defensive end racking up 12 tackles, his third game with 10-plus tackles as he continues to be the nation’s leading tackler among true freshmen. Thieneman forced a pair of fumbles for his fourth and fifth takeaways of the year. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the third time this season. He is the first Boilermaker to earn the recognition at least three times since wide receiver David Bell won the honor four times throughout the 2019 season. Bell went on to become the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Thieneman leads the Boilermakers in tackles, averaging 9.2 per game for the most by any freshman in the country. He is also the nation’s leading freshman in solo tackles (52) and interceptions (3), and his 6.5 solo tackles per game rank second in all of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

Why Bet on the Michigan Wolverines?

Michigan (8-0) has been off since a 49-0 win at Michigan State on Oct. 21 but a sign-stealing scandal has enveloped the program since then. Coach Harbaugh is in the second year of a five-year deal with the Wolverines and the school hoped to have an extension for the head coach done by now but that process was put on hold a week later after Michigan learned that the NCAA was investigating an alleged yearslong cheating scheme.

Harbaugh said he is trying to model a “one-track mind” for his team amid ongoing speculation about the NCAA’s investigation into claims that Michigan staff members paid several individuals to attend the games of future opponents and record the sidelines in an effort to help decode the teams’ play=calling signals. Stealing signs is not an NCAA rules violation. NCAA rules do prohibit any staff member from advance scouting an opponent in person during the regular season.

The Wolverines have been victorious in 20 straight Big Ten games dating to 2021, the new longest streak in program history. The last victory over MSU broke a tie with the 1990-92 squads coached by Gary Moeller which combined won 19 straight league games. The Maize and Blue have won 23 consecutive regular-season games dating to 2021, the third-longest streak in Big Ten history.

With a margin of victory of 49 over the Spartans, U-M tied the 1974 Ohio State team for the most consecutive Big Ten wins by 38-plus points (four). U-M is the only team at the FBS level to be undefeated and win each of its games by 20-plus points. Michigan has held its first eight opponents under 10 points (and won all of those games) for the first time since 1973 when the team went 10-0-1 and allowed a season-high 13 points. U-M has scored 30-plus in 11 straight games, the longest streak in program history. The 1976 squad (eight games) previously held the record. Michigan also has scored 40-plus points in three straight Big Ten games for the first time since 2021.

Michigan leads the NCAA in scoring defense (5.9 avg.), total defense (141.0 avg.) and passing defense (141.0 avg.) while listing second in pass efficiency (96.25 rating). QB J.J. McCarthy is second in the NCAA in completion percentage (78.2%), pass efficiency (195.9 rating) and yards per attempt (10.64 avg.).
