Kansas City Chiefs 2023 Straight-Up Overview
Patrick Mahomes remains the best player in the NFL. The KC quarterback won the NFL MVP last season and is the favorite to repeat the feat this season. As long as Magic Mahomes plays quarterback for the Chiefs, Kansas City will be a Super Bowl contender.
But in 2023, even though the Chiefs will be one of the teams to beat, Kansas City could struggle to make the AFC Championship. The problem Kansas City has is at arguably the second most important position in football, left tackle.
Last season, Orlando Brown Jr. played left tackle for the KC Chiefs. Brown Jr. is one of the top left tackles in the NFL. This season, Brown will do his work for Bengals’ quarterback Joe Burrow.
Replacing left tackle for the Chiefs will be Donovan Smith. Smith used to be one of the top tackles in the NFL. But last season, he was a disaster trying to protect Tom Brady. If Smith struggles, Mahomes will struggle, which means KC’s hopes of repeating rest on Donovan’s shoulders.
Left tackle isn’t the only reason to question Kansas City’s ability to win as many games this season as they did last season. The KC defense ranked sixteenth in points allowed per game. The Chiefs boast a pair of new starting defensive ends in George Karlaftis, last season’s top draft pick, and Charles Omenihu.
If neither steps it up, KC’s D will find it difficult to get to opposing quarterbacks. Also, opponents in the AFC West have gotten better. Denver hired Sean Payton, the Chargers were good last season, and Jimmy Garoppolo plays quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders.
In Kansas City’s favor is the fact the schedule doesn’t look overly difficult. Kansas City went 14-3 straight up last season. In 2023, the Chiefs lost 5 games to go 12-5.
