Why Jalen Hurts Will Win the Super Bowl LVII MVP Award

By Jeff Stinger

The Philadelphia Eagles ran roughshod over their postseason opposition in the NFC and are now in line to win their second-ever Lombardi Trophy. This is largely thanks to a remarkable campaign led by second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is without a doubt the front-runner to win the Super Bowl LVII MVP award amongst all Eagles players. What exactly makes Hurts the leading candidate to take home another piece of hardware along with the Lombardi Trophy in the event that the Eagles do win it all?

Philly’s Loaded Arsenal

Hurts played just 15 out of the 17 regular-season games in 2022 and yet he still managed to rack up over 4,400 all-purpose yards and 35 offensive touchdowns (33 rushing TDs). However, he wouldn’t be such a dual-threat force without a bevy of weapons in the passing game at his disposal. A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith make for a lethal wide-receiving duo as they come, and Dallas Goedert is a top-10 NFL tight end as well. Not to mention that the Eagles’ backfield trio of Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell, and Boston Scott are each savvy in pass-catching duties as well.

Collegiate Champion

It wasn’t long ago when Hurts won a national title back in his days as a member of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Granted that he was still a backup to Tua Tagovailoa then, he still picked up a ton of winning experience with the Tide, especially under the guidance of legendary ‘Bama head coach Nick Saban. Although the Super Bowl is a different beast from the NCAA national title game, Hurts’ composure under pressure has carried over into the pros and we’ve already witnessed his tenacity during Philadelphia’s two blowout playoff wins over the Giants and 49ers.

A Wounded Opponent Approaches

This is more so about the Eagles’ chances of winning the Super Bowl improving but should still be highlighted. The Chiefs came out of their AFC Championship Game battered and beaten, as a good number of their key players on both sides of the ball got injured. Rival star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is also banged up at that with a sprained ankle, which is a good sign that Hurts can outdo Mahomes stats-wise if the latter is not in tip-top shape. Scoring multiple rushing TDs is also a high possibility for Hurts going up against a relatively porous KC defense, and it’s his prowess with his feet that could very well secure him a Super Bowl MVP award when all is said and done.
