2023-24 La Liga Season Overview

There are not lines

Only 11 teams have won the title. This is an astonishing number given that the league has been around for over nine decades and is held on an annual basis–save for a four-year hiatus during the Spanish Civil War. In contrast, 19 clubs have lifted the trophy in the English Premier League in the same period. This goes to show how dominant Real Madrid and Barcelona are in recent times. However, the two were never imposing from the get-go. The most successful side up until the early 1950s was Athletic Bilbao, followed by Atletico Madrid.

Despite falling ten points short of the title last season, Real Madrid are the favorites to win the 2023-24 La Liga title. Carlo Angelotti embarks on another year with the club despite strong links with the Brazil coaching title (which he could potentially secure next summer). The club also added English midfielder Jude Bellingham to the lineup in hopes of adding more talent to the pool. However, Karim Benzema’s departure could hurt the Blancos. They are in dire need of a prolific new center forward ahead of August. Nevertheless, Madridistas are happy to find that they have the best odds of winning the next title at +104.

Real Madrid rivals FC Barcelona are not far behind. The recent winners have aspirations of adding another La Liga title to their portfolio. The Blaugrana are eager to pull off an improved European performance as well, but they should have enough in the tank to gun for the league title as well. After ending a four-year wait for the trophy, Xavi Hernandez found the winning recipe at the end of his first full season as the club’s manager. Barcelona concluded their run with 88 points, including 28 wins and four draws in 38 matches played.

Coming in hot for the title is another Madrid-based team. Atletico Madrid has become the third-biggest force in La Liga over the last decade, during which time they have secured two titles. Is this the year they clinch a third trophy since their last one in 2020-21? As +880 favorites, it’s not difficult to see why many root for them to win. A change of scenery that does not involve FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is always welcome. If Diego Simeone can get his men in line, there’s good reason not to write off this club in the coming months.

As for the likes of Real Betis, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Villareal, and Athletic Bilbao, it would be a huge surprise if any of the middle-table teams and sleepers were to contend for a top-five position. Nonetheless, an underdog story is always welcome in the soccer space.
