Detroit Lions 2023 NFL Season Betting Guide

By Hank Blaine

The Detroit Lions made one of the most controversial first round picks in recent memory this past April when the Lions called Jahmyr Gibbs’ name instead of choosing one of the many fantastic defenders which remained on the board. The Lions’ offense has ascended to NFL royalty status, but the defense was a massive question mark in 2022. Have the Lions done enough this offseason to help their D catch up to their offense? Keep reading for our Detroit Lions 2023 NFL Season Betting Guide.

Detroit Lions 2023 Straight-Up Overview

Last season, the Lions went a winning 9-8. Detroit, though, missed out on making the playoffs. One of the reasons was because they didn’t have a running back that suited their offensive strategy.

Detroit quarterback Jared Goff has had the most success during his career when he threw the football not only to Cooper Kupp but also to Todd Gurley. In one game early on in Goff’s career, Jared threw 10 passes to Gurley.

Knowing that, it makes sense why the Lions might want to add a top pass-catching running back like Jahmyr Gibbs to the offense. Gibbs caught 103 passes in three college season. Jahmyr caught 44 passes while at Alabama in 2022.

Gibbs should do his best Todd Gurley impersonation. But for the offense to truly take the next step, Amon-Ra St. Brown must become elite. St. Brown caught a lot of passes, 106, but only 6 went for TDs. Also, St. Brown’s per catch average was just 11 yard per last season.

If St. Brown can improve, and Gibbs will help in that department, the offense will motor before suspended WR Jameson Williams returns. Williams is elite. So if when he returns Gibbs and St. Brown are having decent seasons, Detroit will have a shot to win the NFC North.

In regards to the defense, the Lions chose LB Jack Campbell from Iowa with their second pick in the first round. So Detroit did pay attention to their D during the NFL Draft.

Because Aaron Rodgers is no longer in Green Bay, the Lions are the NFC North’s team to beat. A quick look at the schedule tells us that in most games, no matter how the defense plays, the Lions should outscore their opponents. Motor City goes from 9-8 in 2022 to 11-6 in 2023.

Detroit Lions 2023 SU Record Prediction: 11-6

Detroit Lions 2023 Against the Spread Overview

Last season, the Lions went 12-5 against the spread. Although Detroit could post the same ATS record this season, it’s more likely oddsmakers adjust.

The Lions snuck up on oddsmakers last season. This season, no chance Detroit sneaks up on the lines makers. Detroit will win more than they lose ATS, but the Lions won’t win 7 more games versus the spread than they lose. 10-7 feels like a solid ATS prediction.

Detroit Lions ATS Record Prediction: 10-7

Detroit Lions 2023 Over/Under Overview

The word is out on how effective the Lions offense will be in 2023. Detroit averaged 26.6 per game last season.

No doubt, Detroit’s offense will score almost the same amount in 2023. Also, the Lions defense, although it won’t be as bad, will allow plenty of points.

Oddsmakers will adjust. Detroit games went 10-7 over to under in 2022. This season we should expect a similar record, which is why 9-8 is the prediction.

Detroit Lions 2023 Over/Under Record Prediction: 9-8
