Cavaliers vs. Trail Blazers 2023 NBA Odds and Preview – January 12th

By Jeff Stinger

The Cleveland Cavaliers have had a challenging road schedule since their home win over the Suns. They picked up two losses in three away games, including a narrow two-point defeat in the hands of the Jazz in their most recent outing. This is their second to last road game before traveling to Minnesota this weekend and head coach J. B. Bickerstaff needs all the pace he could get from this game before then. Meanwhile, the hosts are in a deeper hole with five wins in six games. Despite taking second in Northwest Division, the Blazers remain outside of the playoff picture as it stands and aches to turn things around before the All-Star break.

Nitrobetting shares the latest news, odds, and special features throughout the 2022-23 NBA season. Let’s get a closer look at the upcoming Cavaliers vs. Trail Blazers face-off in this preview.

Why Bet on the Cleveland Cavaliers?

The Cavaliers could miss Jarrett Allen’s services on Thursday night. The big man picked up an illness that left him on the day-to-day list. Nevertheless, veteran Kevin Love is ready to take his post. Ricky Rubio’s return is also getting closer, but it might come later. The rest of the starting lineup looks primed and ready to go, including leading scorer Donovan Mitchell who averages 29.30 points per game in his first year with the Cavs.

Cleveland averages 111.5 points per game on 48.1% shooting. These are numbers that could take the Cavs back into playoff contention. Mitchell’s addition to the team is nothing short of incredible for the young core group. As a team, they hit 55.3% of their two-point shots and 36.3% from downtown.

But despite posting impressive figures, Cleveland’s strength comes primarily from the defense. The Cavs hold a league-best record of 106.8 opponent points per game. They accomplish this with a 51.9% opponent shooting and 51.9% opponent two-point shooting percentage. Furthermore, they protect the paint very well and limit teams to 45.4 points in the paint per game.

Why Bet on the Portland Trail Blazers?

Blazers franchise player Damian Lillard’s status remains unanswered. The 32-year-old guard is day-to-day with a sprained ankle. If he fails to get the green light from team doctors, Shaedon Sharpe is likely to take the starting guard position. Furthermore, the shorthanded situation of the hosts stretches with Gary Payton II on day-to-day and substitute forward Justise Winslow.

Portland averages 112.1 points per game on 47.6% shooting. They hold decent numbers from close range with a 54.3% two-point percentage but can shoot lights out with a 37.2% three-point percentage. Dame Lillard tops the roster with 27.43 points per game, while Jeremi Grant and Anfernee Simons join him in the 20-plus point average.

The hosts do pretty well on the defensive end despite showing a few lapses lately. They hold opponents to 112.0 points per game on 47.2% shooting. Portland closes down the short-range shots and limits competitors to 53.8% from the two-point range. Meanwhile, they cover the perimeter enough to keep teams at 35.9% from downtown. The rebounding figures also have some heft. As a team, the Blazers collect 51.0 total boards per game in 40 contests.

Cavaliers vs. Trail Blazers Expert Betting Prediction

The visitors get a slight advantage on paper. With better performances as of late, we anticipate a close scoreline between the two. An injured Dame Lillard also doesn’t help Portland here while they face a Cavs side firing on all cylinders. With the tight numbers, covering the spread remains doable for Portland, but taking the win is a different story altogether. The Blazers should take advantage of playing in front of their home crowd and control the tempo from the get-go. If they do this, we might see a scoreline closer than anticipated.
