Bears vs. Chargers 2023 NFL Week 8 Odds, Preview & Pick

By Jeff Stinger

Sunday Night Football in Week 8 will serve up a compelling matchup in primetime between two teams that are heading in opposite directions off of last week’s developments. The Chicago Bears shockingly won last weekend with a backup quarterback at the helm, while the Los Angeles Chargers had just faced the wrath of the defending Super Bowl champs. Who’ll come out on top of this inter-conference showdown?

Nitrobetting is ready to take your bets into the end zone this 2023 NFL season. Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming Week 8 clash between the Chicago Bears and the Los Angeles Chargers.

Why Bet on the Chicago Bears?

Against all odds, the Chicago Bears coasted to a 30-12 victory in Week 7 over the Las Vegas Raiders. Chicago picked up just its second win of the season with rookie backup QB Tyler Bagent filling in for injured starter Justin Fields (thumb) in back-to-back weeks and will look to make it two wins in a row against another relatively disappointing team from the AFC East.

Bagent was far more crisp under center in his second NFL start, completing 21 of 29 passes for 162 yards and a passing touchdown with no interceptions. Even though the Bears are without a couple of key starters in the aforementioned Fields and running back Khailil Herbert, who’s still on IR with an ankle injury, they still racked up a total of 173 rushing yards against the Raiders, with backup RB D’Onta Foreman leading the way with 89 rushing yards and a pair of trips to the end zone. There are still reservations about Chicago’s injury-ravaged offense despite the team ranking fifth in the league with an average of 141 rushing yards per game, especially for as long as it’s undermanned without its dynamic starting QB. The Bears’ defense has been middling at best, but holding Las Vegas to just 12 points and 235 total yards is a step in the right direction.

Why Bet on the Los Angeles Chargers?

The Los Angeles Chargers had a golden opportunity to gain some ground in the division race but ended up falling flat on their faces following their Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-17. Kansas City improves to 6-1 while the Chargers slip down to 2-4, further creating separation between KC and the rest of the AFC West in the standings.

Justin Herbert’s mid-season regression has raised several red flags, as he threw multiple INTs in a game for the first time this season against the defending champions. Herbert went just 17-of-30 for 259 passing yards with one passing TD and a pair of picks against a much-improved Chiefs defense. Running back Joshua Kelley also filled in for starting RB Austin Ekeler’s forgettable performance, with Kelley averaging 10.7 yards per carry on just seven touches along with a rushing score.

Sadly, the Chargers’ defense remains a sieve, surrendering four passing TDs to Patrick Mahomes. The Bolts’ D ranks dead-last in the league against opposing aerial assaults, giving up an average of 310 passing yards per game to their opponents this season. Thankfully, Chicago’s passing attack is far from a feared unit in the league, especially with Bagent still in control of the offense and not Fields.

Buccaneers vs. Bills Betting Trends

  • Chicago is 1-6 in their last seven road games (SU/ATS).
  • The Bears are 1-5 in their last six contests against AFC opponents (2-3-1 ATS).
  • The totals went over in nine of Chicago’s last 10 games on the road.
  • LA is 4-2 in their last six home games (3-2-1 ATS).
  • The Bolts are also 4-2 in their last six outings versus teams from the NFC (SU/ATS).
  • The totals went under in four of LA’s last six games played in SoFi Stadium.

Bears vs. Chargers Expert Betting Predictions

It would be a total embarrassment for the Chargers to drop this homestand to the undermanned Bears. That being said, Los Angeles should pull away with a nice bounce-back victory following their beating at the hands of the Chiefs the previous week. But with LA’s passing defense still highly suspect, Chicago should still be able to cover the relatively large point spread as the visiting team who’ll feel right at home in SoFi with countless Bears fans likely to make the trip to SoCal this weekend.
