It’s a big game in the NFC West to kick off Week 15 in the NFL on Thursday night as the San Francisco 49ers, who are likely to win the division, visit the Seattle Seahawks, who could be an NFC playoff team – or keep their division hopes alive with an upset. San Francisco clinches the NFC West with a win.

These teams met in Week 2 and the Niners were 27-7 home winners despite then-starting QB Trey Lance leaving with what would prove to be a season-ending injury. Lance broke his right ankle on the second drive of the game — Jimmy Garoppolo threw a touchdown pass on his first full drive after replacing Lance and ran for another score.

Why Bet on the San Francisco 49ers?

Jimmy G completed his first five passes, including a 38-yard touchdown pass to Ross Dwelley that put San Francisco up 13-0. The Niners mostly coasted from there. Of course, Garoppolo was recently lost to his own season-ending injury. Geno Smith went 24 for 30 for 198 yards and an interception. Seattle also had a trick play near the goal line backfire for another turnover and rushed for only 35 yards on the day.

Brock Purdy, the Mr. Irrelevant in this year’s draft, made his first NFL start under center last Sunday for the Niners and led a 35-7 beatdown of Tampa Bay. Purdy completed 16 of 21 pass attempts (76.2 percent) for two touchdowns with no interceptions for a 134.0 rating and added a rushing touchdown in the win. He became the first rookie in the Super Bowl era with at least two touchdown passes, one rushing touchdown and a passer rating of 125-or-higher in his first career start. Purdy was also the first QB making his first NFL start to ever beat Tom Brady.

Purdy did injure his oblique but will start Thursday. Purdy suffered the injury when he dived for a first down on a play that was called back for a holding penalty on San Francisco’s second drive Sunday.

Pro Bowl receiver Deebo Samuel suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee and a sprained left ankle. As he was tackled at the end of a 3-yard gain, Samuel’s left leg was pinned under Tampa Bay defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches. The Bucs recovered Samuel’s fumble. He will miss some time but there were no broken bones and he is “expected to return at some point during the regular season.”

Starting defensive tackle Kevin Givens was another injury of note for the Niners after hurting his left knee and leaving on a cart in the first half. The team said he suffered a sprained MCL, too, and will be “out for a few weeks.”

The 49ers enter Week 15 with the NFL’s top ranked defense, allowing the fewest points per game (15.2), yards per game (286.8) and rushing yards per game (75.1) in the league. Nick Bosa leads the NFL with 14.5 sacks this season and can become the fifth player since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic, to record at least 15 sacks in two of his first four NFL seasons. He aims for his fourth in a row against Seattle with a sack.

Seattle lost for the third time in four games Sunday, a 30-24 home upset vs. Carolina. Sam Darnold and Carolina built leads of 17-0 and 20-7 to take advantage of a sloppy, unenthusiastic first-half performance by the Seahawks. In the second half, the Panthers simply ran through Seattle’s defense. Carolina rushed for 223 yards. Seattle has allowed two of its last three opponents to top 200 yards rushing and five straight opponents have rushed for at least 122 yards. Geno Smith completed 21-of-36 passes for 264 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions in the loss.

Good-looking rookie running back Kenneth Walker III didn’t play but will Thursday. Walker leads all rookies with nine rushing touchdowns and ranks second with 449 rushing yards (4.7-yard average). The Seahawks’ run game has been held to fewer than 70 yards in three of the team’s past four games, including only 46 against the Panthers while Walker and backup DeeJay Dallas were both sidelined. Dallas also missed the Carolina game and is questionable for this one.

Seattle wideout Tyler Lockett has 71 receptions for 896 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022, his fifth-consecutive season with at least eight touchdown receptions. On Thursday, he can become the first player since 2020 (Davante Adams) with a touchdown catch in seven consecutive games.

It’s also difficult to land on the Dolphins to cover because they don’t play well on the road. Miami is one of the worst road covering teams in the NFL, going 2-5 ATS in their road games.
