A Look at the MLB Division Title Favorites

AL East

The odds on the Yankees should change now that it’s been revealed that Gerrit Cole has an elbow injury. There’s no telling how long the injury will last. A month, for sure, which isn’t ideal.

The Yankees have nobody on the roster that can step into Cole’s place. Even with a healthy Cole, New York is a bad bet to win the AL East no matter the odds because the Orioles and Blue Jays have put together better starting rotations.

Are the Yankees worth a bet to win the AL East: No

AL Central

Pablo Lopez posted 234 strikeouts in 2023. This season, Lopez could take the next step and become uber elite, meaning he ends up with an under 3.00 ERA, strikeouts a few more batters, and produces a WHIP close to 1.00.

If that happens, watch out. Joe Ryan and Bailey Ober are an excellent 2 and 3. The bats will be there and the Central is a disaster after the Twins.

Are the Twins worth a bet to win the AL Central: Yes

AL West

Texas is the defending World Series Champions. So what has changed? Why are the Houston Astros the favorite to win the division when the Rangers are the exact same team from last season?

Unless something is different, Bruce Bochy continues to manage the Rangers, which means Texas will win this division and it won’t be as close as the odds indicate.

Are the Astros worth a bet to win the AL West: No

NL East

Philadelphia is a terrific baseball team. But the Phillies don’t have enough to overtake Ronald Acuna and the Braves’ batting lineup or Spencer Strider, Max Fried, and the ATL’s starting rotation.

There’s also the fact that Atlanta bombed in the postseason after a ridiculous regular season in 2023. Motivation will be the key factor for the Braves to make it to the World Series in 2024. At the odds, Atlanta is an overlay.

Are the Braves worth a bet to win the NL East: No

NL Central

There are not lines

The Cubs have a possible starting star in Justin Steele. Sonny Gray heads up the Cardinals’ rotation and although he’s a good pitcher, he’s not the ace the Cards will require to win the NL Central.

The Cubs should be the chalk. So at the odds, St. Louis is a big time no to win the Central.

Are the Cardinals worth a bet to win the NL Central: No

NL West

There are not lines

Walker Buehler remains injured. No telling if he will ever come back. Tyler Glasnow has been oft-injured the past couple of seasons.

The Dodgers list Glasnow at the top of their rotation. So if Glasnow and Buehler don’t perform, does that mean Shohei ends up pitching and hitting again? Not only that, but the rest of the rotation isn’t great.

You can’t win the NL, or AL for that matter, if you can’t pitch. The Dodgers went from having a dynamite rotation to one that’s mediocre unless Yoshinobu Yamamoto is all that and the proverbial bag of chips. Even if Yamamoto is, Dave Roberts will struggle managing the rotation and the bats aren’t as lively as the odds indicate. Also, the Giants and D’Backs are good baseball teams.

Are the Dodgers worth a bet to win the NL West: No
