2023 UCI World Championships Odds

By Jeff Stinger

Cycling’s pinnacle riders are coming to Scotland to race in the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships. After the much-anticipated Tour de France concluded with Jonas Vingegaard as the event’s winner, cycling fans and bettors are treated to another fierce battle between the world’s best cyclists. Four riders are within striking distance of a win on paper. Four-time 2023 TdF stage winner Jasper Philipsen tops the boards, closely followed by Wout Van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel. Mads Pedersen also cuts the three-figure odds.

The Men’s Elite Road Race takes off on August 6, 2023. It is the sole cycling event Nitrobetting covers for the month, so make sure you don’t miss this one. Let’s go over the rest of the peloton and how they stack up against the favorites.

2023 UCI Cycling World Championships Overview

There are not lines

The Tour’s defending champion won’t feature in this year’s race in Glasgow, but many of his teammates and fellow Danish riders are up for the challenge. One of the four riders in the group, Mads Pedersen, is a heavy favorite at +660. He is the winner of the UCI Men’s Road Race in 2019 and is a classic specialist who has incredible power on flat terrain. Mountain roads aren’t his first option, but there won’t be testing ascents in Scotland.

The others hail from Northern Europe–Belgian rider and Jumbo-Visma key domestique Wout Van Aert who’s at +660 leading up to the competition. He is considered one of the choice riders for one-day races. Not only does he pack speed on flat courses, but he can hang with the best climbers if needed. Many consider him the most complete cyclist in the international peloton now.

Outside the list of Northerners, a few European riders are in the top five. Slovenian rider Tadej Pogacar and two-time Tour de France winner boasts an arsenal of tools that can catapult him to the front of the pack. French rider Christophe Laporte makes a solid case, while another Jumbo-Visma rider, Olav Kooij, trails him at +2,100.

The numbers for the 2023 UCI World Championships suggest a tight race. Jasper Philipsen sits on the throne for now. He’s an expert sprinter that excels at this type of race. The course is run across a 106.31-mile road between Edinburgh and Glasgow, which only features two minor climbs. That said, this race favors fast sprinters who don’t need climbing legs which means the +460 can maximize his potential from the very start of the race.
