2023 FIBA World Cup Group E Betting Odds

By Jeff Stinger

Group E features three powerhouse teams: Germany, Australia, and Finland. This group is about to bring action-packed basketball with sleeper team Japan in the mix. Each team plays each other once, for a total of three games per side, with all games played at Japan’s home territory in Okinawa, Japan. The top two teams advance to the second round with the bottom two teams going to the classification rounds. Have a peek at the 2023 FIBA World Cup Group E winner betting odds below.

2023 FIBA World Cup Group E Teams

Australia

  • Odds to win Group E: -250
  • NBA players playing for Australia: Xavier Cooks (Washington Wizards), Dyson Daniels (New Orleans Pelicans), Dante Exum (Dallas Mavericks), Josh Giddey (Oklahoma City Thunder), Josh Green (Dallas Mavericks), Joe Ingles (Orlando Magic), Jock Landale (Houston Rockets), Patty Mills (Atlanta Hawks), Matisse Thybulle (Portland Trail Blazers), Jack White (Oklahoma City Thunder)

The team from the Land Down Under is stacked with NBA players. Australia qualified for the World Cup for a fifth-straight time and missed out on only one of the last 14 events. The third-ranked team in the world reached the Semi-Finals for the first time in 2019 for their best-ever finish. The Boomers made their World Cup appearance official in November 2022 after sending home Kazakhstan to remain undefeated in Asian Qualifiers.

Australia carries solid results leading up to the tournament. They reached the Semis at the Olympics in 2016 and 2021, the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup Semis in 2019, and two FIBA Asia Cup titles in between. With the final round just around the corner, we eagerly anticipate what this squad can do. They are heavy favorites to win Group E and are likely to book an early knockout appearance as the third-best team in the FIBA World Ranking.

Germany

  • Odds to win Group E: +271
  • NBA players playing for Germany: Maxi Kleber (Dallas Mavericks), Dennis Schroder (Toronto Raptors), Daniel Theis (Indiana Pacers), Franz Wagner (Orlando Magic), Moritz Wagner (Orlando Magic)

This European powerhouse now qualified for five of the last six FIBA World Cup editions, missing out on the 2014 tournament. The Germans rank No. 11 in the world. They won third place in 2022 but followed it up with an underwhelming campaign in 2019 where they finished 18th. The Team bounced back from the poor performance and closed third in the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 and qualified for the World Cup shortly after.

The refreshed lineup features multiple NBA key players like Dennis Schroder, Daniel Theis, and Maxi Kleber. Having a gritty lineup makes them second-favorites of Group E and proved that they can muscle their way to the latter stages of any tournament. Don’t be surprised if they fight for a podium position in September.

Finland

  • Odds to win Group E: +1,400
  • NBA players playing for Finland: Lauri Markkanen (Utah Jazz)

Finland headlined the European Qualifiers and qualified first in the August 2022 window. This means the nation returns to the World Cup stage after missing out in 2019. The 24th-ranked team debuted not too long ago in 2014 and finished 22nd.

We are excited about Finland’s new direction. The team is about to reach uncharted territory when it comes to basketball. Lauri Markkanen is a global icon and an NBA All-Star. He waves the Finnish flag and sparks life into the lineup. The fact that they reached the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 Quarter-Finals is a solid statement. As the team prepares to host the next FIBA EuroBasket, expect nothing but quality performances coming from head coach Lassi Tuovi and his crew.

Japan

  • Odds to win Group E: +2,200
  • NBA players playing for Japan: Yuta Watanabe (Phoenix Suns), Rui Hachimura (Los Angeles Lakers)

Co-hosts Japan make their sixth appearance in the FIBA World Cup following back-to-back appearances for the first time since 1963 and 1967. Their best performance came by way of an eleventh-place finish in 1967. The No. 38 ranked team qualified for the 2023 World Cup as a co-host nation and has the power of home advantage to achieve their best tournament finish.

Japan boasts NBA stars Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe in their arsenal of players. The nation is coming off a five-game winning streak to end the Asian Qualifiers as well. This is proper fuel for a team looking to survive the group stage as heavy underdogs.
