2023 College Football Week 10 Odds, Overview & Picks

The first College Football Playoff rankings were released this week with the top four featuring unbeatens Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan and Florida State in that order. The early loser? Unbeaten Washington and Heisman Trophy favorite Michael Penix Jr. as the Huskies are fifth. The Huskies face a tough Pac-12 test Saturday at No. 20 USC. Here’s a pick for that and two other intriguing matchups Saturday.

Missouri Tigers vs. Georgia Bulldogs

Huge game in the SEC East with Georgia atop the division at 5-0 in league play and Missouri second at 3-1. If the Dawgs win here, they all but lock up the East yet again. MU (7-1) is coming off a bye following a 34-12 win over South Carolina retaining the Mayor’s Cup for the fifth-straight season. The Tigers are off to a 7-1 start for the fifth time in program history, most recently in 2013, when the Tigers went on to finish 12-2 and captured their first SEC East Division title. Mizzou leads the nation in red-zone offense and has logged six-straight games scoring at least 30 points. MU has averaged 470.2 ypg in the last five games and sit fifth (SEC) and 30th (FBS) in yards per game (443.0). QB Brady Cook has logged 300+ yards passing in four of the last six games. His 2,259 passing yards rank him third in the SEC and 15th in the NCAA FBS. CB Kris Abrams-Draine leads the SEC and is No. 2 in the FBS in passes defended (14). He’s tied for 6th nationally with 4 INTs.

Georgia (8-0) is one of only three teams in the country who are ranked in the top seven in both Scoring Offense and Scoring Defense. Georgia is tied for seventh in Scoring Offense at 40.5 points per game. The Bulldogs rank seventh nationally in Scoring Defense at 14.8 ppg. The other two teams are Michigan (8-0) and SMU (6-2). One of the keys to Georgia’s success is its third down defense. The Bulldogs lead the country with opponents converting just 25 percent of the time. In the past four SEC games, Georgia opponents are a combined 10-for-43 on third downs (23 percent). The Bulldogs are third nationally in converting third downs (56 percent). Georgia is 42-4 at home in the Kirby Smart era, including 11-1 against ranked opponents. In fact, the Bulldogs have won their last 11 games in Athens versus ranked opponents. This is 13th meeting between the Bulldogs and the Tigers. MU’s lone win came during the 2013 season, 41-26, in Athens.

Washington Huskies vs. USC Trojans

Massive game in the Pac-12 between Heisman candidate QBs Michael Penix Jr. of Washington, the current favorite, and 2022 winner USC Caleb Williams – he would need a miracle at this point to repeat. UW is 8-0 for just the sixth time in school history. The Huskies lead the nation in passing offense and are No. 5 in total offense. In less than two seasons, Penix is up to third in UW history in career TD passes, with 51. He has thrown multiple TDs in 16 of his 21 games at UW and his 7,586 career yards rank him 5th. Penix is No. 1 in FBS passing yards and pass yards per game, No. 2 in total offense, No. 3 in pass TDs and No. 6 in pass efficiency. . UW enters the week with the nation’s second-longest active winning streak among FBS teams, with 15 victories in a row. only Georgia, with a 24-game run, has a longer active streak. It’s the third-longest in UW history, after 40 (1908-16) and 22 (1990-92). Washington and USC have played one another 86 times since the series began in 1923. The Trojans hold a 52-30-4 series advantage.

Williams is currently No. 1 in the nation in points responsible for (208), points responsible for per game (23.1), tied for No. 1 in the nation in passing touchdowns (25), No. 2 in the nation in passing yards (2,646), No. 7 in the nation in passing efficiency (175.4), No. 9 in the nation in yards per pass attempt (9.55), No. 9 in the nation in total offense (309.1) and No. 10 in the nation in passing yards per game (294.0). He is also tied for No. 1 in the conference in rushing touchdowns (9). The Trojan offense is No. 2 in the nation for scoring offense (45.9), No. 3 in the nation for first downs offense (212), No. 7 in the nation for passing offense (328.3) and No. 8 in the nation for team passing efficiency (172.21). Zachariah Branch is currently No. 1 in the nation in combined kick returns (641) and No. 2 in the nation in punt returns (20.6), kickoff return TDs (1) and punt return TDs (1). It’s Homecoming at USC, which has a 67-27-4 record in its Homecoming games, dating back to the first such event in 1924.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Clemson Tigers

Clemson’s goals already have been quashed with the team at a shocking 4-4 and Coach Dabo Swinney coming under some fire. Notre Dame still has an outside shot at the College Football Playoff with two losses but must win out and get some help. NCAAF pick: Senior quarterback Sam Hartman became the sixth FBS player to throw for over 15,000 yards in a career in the victory over Pittsburgh last weekend. Hartman passed Ty Detmer on the all-time passing yardage list with his current up to 15,093 yards. With 901 rushing yards this season, junior Audric Estimé has his sights set on becoming the 13th Notre Dame player to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Estimé needs 119 more yards to become the 19th Notre Dame player to rush for 2,000 yards in a career. Notre Dame’s red zone defense has improved 127 spots in the national rankings from 2022 (129) to 2023 (currently 2nd). Notre Dame is 18-2 (.900) all-time as the No. 12 team against unranked opponents, the two losses coming to unranked Purdue at home in 1960 and on the road in 1997.

Tigers star RB Will Shipley is in question for this one as he’s in the concussion protocol. Shipley was a first-team All-ACC performer at three different positions last season after rushing for 1,182 yards and 15 touchdowns, catching 38 passes for 242 yards and averaging 23.1 yards per kick return. This year, Shipley leads Clemson with 515 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He is averaging 4.6 yards per carry. On Saturday, Swinney will again attempt to pass College Football Hall of Famer Frank Howard for sole possession of Clemson’s all-time head coaching wins record. Swinney tied Howard with his 165th career victory in a 17-12 win against Wake Forest on Oct. 7. Clemson looks to improve to 34-9 in games following a loss under Swinney, including season openers following a loss in the previous season finale. – Clemson attempting to improve to 20-9 under Swinney in rematches with opponents to whom he’s lost his most recent meeting. Clemson is 4-3 all-time vs. Notre Dame but the Irish knocked off undefeated and fifth-ranked Clemson in Notre Dame Stadium last season 35-14.
