Avalanche vs. Jets 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs Odds & Game 5 Preview
The Winnipeg Jets were supposed to have the goal tending edge in their first-round Western Conference playoff matchup against Colorado, but that has not been the case so far, with the Avalanche able to win the series on Tuesday in Game 5 in Winnipeg. The Avs are short favorites.

Why Bet on the Colorado Avalanche?
Valeri Nichushkin scored the 13th playoff hat trick in Avalanche/Nordiques history in Game 4 and his first career. Nichushkin deposited two power-play goals in the second period to give the Avalanche a 4-1 lead going into the third period. He added an empty-net goal late in the third and now has six goals in the series. Including the regular season, Nichushkin is on a six-game point streak, scoring eight goals and one assist over that span.
Artturi Lehkonen and Cale Makar each had a goal and assist on Sunday. Lehkonen and Nichushkin became the third set of teammates in NHL history with simultaneous postseason-opening goal streaks of four or more games, following Lanny McDonald and Joe Mullen with the 1986 Flames as well as Ron Duguay and Ulf Nilsson with the 1981 Rangers. Makar (also 2022) became the second defenseman in NHL history with eight points through four games in a postseason multiple times, joining Bobby Orr (1971 & 1972).
The Avalanche became the fifth team in NHL history with five or more goals in each of their first four games from the start of a postseason, joining the 1985 Black Hawks (7 GP), 1994 Rangers (6 GP), 1981 Islanders (5 GP) and 1946 Canadiens (4 GP). Each club went on to win the Stanley Cup, except for Chicago.
Alexander Georgiev allowed one goal on 27 shots in Sunday’s win. Georgiev allowed a first-period goal on the fifth shot of the game, but then kicked aside the next 22 shots to keep the Jets off the scoreboard. After a poor performance in Game 1, Georgiev has allowed only five goals on 77 shots for a .935 save percentage in the last three games.
“I’ve really liked all four games from our group,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. “We made some mistakes in Game 1. We made less in Game 2. We made less in Game 3. We probably made less here tonight on the defensive side of things. But our compete level and the intensity that we’re playing with, the speed and pace we’re playing with, the commitment that the team has playing with, has been great in all four games.”
Why Bet on the Winnipeg Jets?
Winnipeg won Game 1 of this series 7-6 but has lost three straight by multiple goals since to get on the verge of elimination. The Jets looked nothing short of terrible Sunday in a 5-1 loss in Denver. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was named a Vezina Trophy finalist on Monday as top regular-season goalie, but he has been terrible in this series.
Hellebuyck gave up four goals on 30 shots in Sunday’s loss and was pulled after the second period. Two of the four goals against Hellebuyck came on the power play, and he was replaced by backup Laurent Brossoit. Hellebuyck has now allowed 19 goals on 131 shots in the first-round series. It is not believed that Brossoit will start Tuesday but Hellebuyck might have a rather short leash. Hellebuyck has made some great saves in this series and the scores would surely be even more lopsided without him, but his reputation as a playoff goaltender is taking a beating.
“Give him a break,” Coach Rick Bowness said. “Just too much time in there having to make save after save. Just giving him a break. That’s not on him whatsoever. That’s on the players in front of him.”
Hellebuyck now has a 5.22 goals against average and .870 save percentage through four games of the series. His GAA is 17th among all goalies who have started games during the postseason, and his save percentage is 15th. Considering there are only 16 teams in the postseason, those numbers are terrible. He does lead the league in shots faced (147) by a wide margin (next most is 119) and his 127 saves are 20 more than any other goalie.
Defenseman Nate Schmidt had the lone goal in Game 4, only his third goal of the season. Winnipeg is also not healthy. Winger Morgan Barron will miss his sixth straight contest after getting hurt in the penultimate game of the regular season. He had 11 goals and seven assists in 80 games.
Center Vladislav Namestnikov has a fractured cheekbone, but he hasn’t been ruled out of Tuesday’s must-win Game 5. Namestnikov may put on a full cage and try to gut it out Tuesday, but his status for Game 5 may not be confirmed until the Jets take the ice for pregame warmups. He’s picked up one goal, eight hits and a minus-3 rating through the first four games. Defenseman Brenden Dillon will also miss Game 5. Logan Stanley started for him Sunday.
